Soup

I was making some home-made veggie soup this weekend-yes I am that domestic-when I cut my thumb. I have these really great Pampered Chef knifes that have there own protective sheath that sharpens the knife so these knives are quite sharp. It went through the tip of my thumb like butter.

Don't worry, I was cutting the last of my 10,000 veggies for the soup and no blood made it into the mix. However, it did cause me to ponder some questions

  1. Why did I cut my thumb when I was on my last veggie? I have been cooking for quite a while and this is the first time I can remember cutting my finger this bad.
  2. How come even though I am left handed, the right thumb seems to be so important? So many tasks seem affected by this wound.
  3. Why do I use my right hand for so many things despite being left handed? Is this based on a society that wants us to all be right handed and confuses children until they don't know what hand to use-can I hear some confirmation from other lefties on this?
  4. Why did my thumb have a pulsing heartbeat feeling once it was cut? What is the medical term for this and why does it do that?
  5. How come no band-aids are made to fit the top of the finger or thumb? How come I must wrap a regular band-aid around the wound and have it either take up my whole finger or stick out like a sore thumb (Ha, get it)

Any thoughts?

Ouch!

Let me use my thumb cutting expertise to try to answer these questions for you.

-why did you cut your thumb on the last veggie? Maybe someone was teaching you need to be more careful next time while cutting veggies you were getting a little too confident and cocky in your cutting abilities and forgot that accidents can happen :-)

-Your right thumb is so important because it is impossible to do anything with one hand or one thumb. People who have strokes and can only use one hand are pretty much left to be cared for. They can't open things or take care of themselves in general. Why do you think they took "Happy Days" off the air "the Fonz" had a freak vegetable cutting accident and couldnt go "aye" anymore.

-Why do you use your right so much? Because even lefties have rights too! No but seriously what do you use your right for? Because if you do just as many things with your right as your left you might be ambidextrous which you use both sides pretty evenly. Is this the case? For instance I write with my left hand, but use scissors with my right, I shoot a basketball right handed, but shoot a gun left handed. I eat with both hands, I just shovel it in...but I honestly will pick up a fork with my left and start eating, and the next time I eat I will use my right without even thinking about it. Do ever do this?

-why does your thumb throb after cutting? my guess is the pooling of blood to injured area and the oxygen in the blood being released. If you cut your thumb and its throbbing did you know if you shut the lights it will glow in the dark?

-Why can't you find a bandage that goes on the tip of the thumb?Because if you had a small bandage on your thumb you wouldnt get this question 10 times a day "what did you do to your thumb" and don't we all love that kind of sympathy and attention? Pity is very underated.

*Let this be a lesson for all the kids out there if you want to eat healthy vegetables have your mommy cut them.

I enjoyed your comments!

I think this is what I get for trying to eat healthy. You say that eating healthy is good, but yet when I do I end up bleeding?

Is this the advice you give to all of your clients? If so, you may want to warn them about knives.

I think the real question out of this post was;
Were you drinking again?

This is the first time I read your blog (I forgot to check my WMU email recently) and it's so great! This is so fun to read. I'll have to make sure Steph is reading it too. Oh and I found out GG starts the 26th, well maybe the 27th for us, you know how that goes.

I think you notice your right thumb is important only when you don't have use of it. It's that old phrases: "You don't know what you've go 'til it's gone". And, you can trust me on this since I'm left-handed, too! As far as the last vegie goes...it would HAVE to be the last veggie you cut because once you sliced open your thumb, you would stop, right? It's like my mother would say when finding something she had misplaced: "Wouldn't you know it, it was in the last place I looked?"!

Well, thank you all for the responses.

To Rob, no I was not drinking again-that was Sat night, who drinks on Sunday? :-)

Julie, I'm glad you like the blog-it's quite fun.

Liz, you are right it is always the last one! Least that means I was able to enjoy the soup!
